Checking in on Tom O’Dell.

Thursday, August 14th, 2008

It’s been a very long time since I’ve written about Cutlery Corner.

That’s almost completely due to the fact that we switched from Dish Network to AT&T U-Verse last December and lost the Cutlery Corner Network channel. Sure, I was able to do a little math and figure out the time slot that CCN was airing on the local station that carries ION, but it was on so freakin’ early in the morning and only for an hour. After one episode it seemed like too much trouble to record on the DVR.

A couple of Saturdays ago we were sitting around at my brother-in-law’s house and thought we’d check in on Tom, Sheila and the gang. What a disappointment.

There was no fun. No joking around. No thoughts in the back of your mind that might suggest they were drunk in the presence of all that cutlery. The strangest thing was going on — THEY WERE ACTUALLY SELLING.

Straightforward “features and benefits” type of salesmanship. It was dry and uncaptivating. We changed the channel after five minutes.

Before, when I just knew that if I watched long enough someone was going to lose a finger, I was ready to lay my credit card down for just about any crappy ol’ set of knives they were hawking. Now, those blades have lost their luster. Sometimes it’s best to leave old memories alone.

That doesn’t mean that when I visit my family in Oklahoma this weekend that I won’t be tuning in again to see if they can redeem themselves.

What Was Tom Smoking? - Honey Roasted or Boiled

ccn-5781.jpgThis 18 piece steel dream features an array of peanuts.

Every color, every finish… each peanut is a symphony of slicing and Rockwell tested to 56-58 hardness.

And there’s a 4 piece mini peanut pearl set thrown in. Delightful and full of VALLUUUUE.

Retails for $272.33, it’s yours for $99.95. What could you cut with all this? Not a Christmas tree. I’ll give you that hint right up front.

What Was Tom Smoking? - Robin’s Stance

Saturday, December 1st, 2007

NaBloPoMo’s over but I can’t help it, the deals are just too good.

WWTS? for today is Robin’s Stance… a gold-handled Robin Hood sword with a spectacular red and white shield. It’s yours for $78.00.

Even better than the deal itself was the salesmanship on this piece last night. During the time that this was on, Tom nearly decapitated Sheila with the sword and then “tested the shield” later on by smacking it with the sword while Sheila was holding it.

I swear that last night the crew got into the egg nog way too much. There were more dropped knives and “ouch”-es yelled than I’d seen in my entire time watching the Cutlery Corner Network. It was a glorious trainwreck and I hated to finally turn off the TV to go to bed.

I also think that maybe… just MAYBE… they mentioned me last night. Sheila got to talking about how Tom has a fan base out there and that there are web sites that talk about him. There are a few other sites that have mentioned Tom O’Dell and the Cutlery Corner Network, but not a ton. So, I’m thinking that they’re talking about me, baby… ME.

Tom, Sheila, those other couple of guys who show up occasionally for no apparent reason… I think you need to pay service where it’s due. I need a mention on your network. Here’s what I propose: Name a knife deal after this blog… the martini shaker.

It could be a doctor’s knife, a skinner, a peanut, and a cocktail shaker. Sell it for $49.95 and you’ll be golden. But, you have to name it the martini shaker and you have to mention my blog on air. I guarantee you I’ll buy one. And, hopefully the readers of this site will see fit to do the right thing and buy the set of quality Frost Cutlery that bears the name of this fine site.

This could be the beginning of a beautiful relationship.

//UPDATE: I have sent the URL for this post as well as all the previous WWTS? posts to the Cutlery Corner Network and have mentioned my proposal for having a knife deal named after this blog. I’ll keep you updated on anything that transpires.
