Steampunk is intriguing

steampunk.jpgA couple of weeks ago I was looking at an article about a steampunk laptop on Engadget and I was impressed by the craftsmanship. So, I decided to look a little more into steampunk and see what it’s about.

From Wikipedia:

Steampunk is a subgenre of fantasy and speculative fiction which came into prominence in the 1980s and early 1990s. The term denotes works set in an era or world where steam power is still widely used—usually the 19th century, and often set in Victorian era England—but with prominent elements of either science fiction or fantasy, such as fictional technological inventions like those found in the works of H. G. Wells and Jules Verne, or real technological developments like the computer occurring at an earlier date.

I think the only books I’ve read that I’d categorize as steampunk would be the Dark Tower series by Stephen King. As good as I thought those were, it’s the steampunk recreations of modern objects that I think are the coolest.

If you want to look at more examples of things like the keyboard pictured above, go to Steampunk Workshop. You’ll be glad you did.

ROFLCon

ROFLCon, the convention that attempts to gather every Internet meme or celebrity into one kick ass event is going to take place April 25-27 in Cambridge, MA.

With featured guests like The Tron Guy, Leslie Hall, the creators of Homestar Runner, and Gröûp X on board, who wouldn’t want to go?

We can ask to be sent to one conference a year at work. This would be my pick, but I’m pretty sure it wouldn’t qualify. Guess I’ll stick with trying to go to SxSWi.

Inspiration Monday - Flash On

flash_on.jpgAdobe released a really slick entertainment interface (enterface?) with Flash On

It’s beautiful, plays HD quality video, and if it had more content, would give YouTube a run for its money. Of course, something this nice probably doesn’t scale for traffic terribly well.
